Fall in DC, Virginia & Maryland, Oct 30-Nov 2

Back ] Up ] Next ]

We spent a night in the nation's capital, then crossed the Potomac River into Virginia and headed for the Blue Ridge Mountains.  Subsequent nights were spent in the university town of Charlottesville and in Annapolis, Maryland, on Chesapeake Bay.  The weather was warm and the autumnal colours beautiful.

Sought-after houses in DC's Georgetown neighbourhood.

The White House in Foggy Bottom.

The Washington Monument and the Mall.

Capitol Hill.

Out on the town in Old Downtown.

At Zola's.

Plenty of fancy-dress on Halloween Eve...

...in the Adams-Morgan neighbourhood.

A slice of England  -  Sunday lunch at the Red Fox Inn in Middlesburg.

On our way to the Blue Ridge Mountains.

In Shendoah National Park, near the West Virginia state line.

One of many observation points along the 100-mile Skyline Drive.

Night falls.

Ash Lawn-Highland  -  home of 5th president James Monroe  -  outside Charlottesville
in the midst of Virginia wine country.

Monticello  -  the Palladian-style home of 3rd president Thomas Jefferson.
(We also drove past the home of 4th president James Madison.)

The grounds of Monticello (sensible shoes for a walking tour!).

Our lovely B&B in Annapolis.

Looking towards the State House, the oldest state capitol
in continual use.  (Annapolis was the capital of the
United States from 1783-4.)

One of several nice residential streets.

The harbour, on the edge of Chesapeake Bay.

Back in Washington: the US Supreme Court
(unfortunately we just missed a court session).

Reading about Brown vs. the Board of Education outside
the Library of Congress.

The National Archives, where we saw the Declaration
of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

The Reflecting Pool and the Washington Monument
(taken from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial).

Abraham Lincoln and Mike.
