E-Thoughts: Awards Season
'06
Oscars/Mar
5: A week later this year because
of the Winter Olympics, the Academy Awards had a new host,
comedian Jon Stewart of The Daily Show, and for once no
one film dominated. Jessica Alba seemed every inch the
glamorous movie starlet in skintight gold Versace; new mum
Jennifer Garner was radiant in a sparkly, cream Michael Kors
gown; and Reece Witherspoon looked like a princess in floor-length
Christian Dior couture as she gave the most tearful speech of the
night. A rumoured-to-be-engaged Nicole Kidman wore her blond
hair straight and a white dress by Balenciaga; also in white was a
goddess-like Uma Thurman; and Naomi Watts had pretty hair and
makeup, but I didn't like the frayed pieces on her nude dress. Black was the gown of choice for
Felicity Huffman in Zac Posen, Jennifer Aniston, keeping it simple
with a scooped-neckline (she walked the red carpet alone, but
Vince Vaughn snuck into the Vanity Fair party after her), Hilary
Swank, showing off her great body in strapless Versace, and Rachel
Weiss in a cap-sleeved maternity dress made for her by Narcisso
Rodriguez. Charlize Theron, accompanied by her mom and thus
sparking rumors of a split with long-time beau Stuart Townsend,
caused some controversy with the huge bow on one shoulder of her deep green
Dior gown; and Keira Knightley was sultry in a burgundy
one-strap Vera Wang creation topped off with smoky eyes,
strawberry blonde hair in a high ponytail and a Bulgari jeweled
necklace. Latin lovelies Salma Hayek and Jennifer Lopez
flaunted their curves in royal blue and vintage avocado
respectively; Jennifer Esposito looked gorgeous in pale grey
(unable to attend the ceremony, she heard about her movie's Best
Picture win in the car on her way to the after-parties); and
Michelle Williams dazzled in a vibrant 1930s-style Vera Wang gown,
complete with red lips and waves. George Clooney, Matt
Dillon, Jake Gyllenhaal and Eric Bana all looked handsome in the
traditional black tux and bow tie, which has been making a
comeback (fashionistas would also tell you that peaked lapels were
in). And finally, the worst dressed by far were Helena
Bonham-Carter and husband Tim Burton.

E-Thoughts: Awards Season '05
Emmys/Sep
18: And last but not least were my namesake TV awards, the
Emmys. I will comment only on the red carpet attire, as the ceremony itself was
predictable and dull. Of those Desperate Housewives
- always worthy of a mention - Marcia Cross
was the clear winner with Felicity Huffman in second place (Teri
Hatcher's ultra-thin arms spoilt her look). Halle Berry was unbeatable in a strapless,
royal blue number; The OC's Kelly Rowan and Mischa Barton looked
lovely in red and nude respectively (pint-sized Rachel Bilson really shouldn't stand next to
her 5'7" costar); Mariska Hargitay was pretty in coral; and Kyra Sedgwick had beautiful retro waves.
The bad included a couple of repeat offenders: Paula
Abdul and Debra Messy (sorry, Messing); Patricia Arquette; Jennifer Love Hewitt
(enough with the Audrey-Hepburn-circa-1960 look!); and a
heavily-pregnant Jennifer Garner Affleck ... and the meanest thing
I read: that Charlize Theron wore unflattering Payless-style
shoes.

Oscars/Feb 27:
Morgan Freeman was an early winner, signaling a good
night for M$B, though The Aviator reaped more
awards. A new format had nominees in the lesser
categories grouped together on stage.....or the winners receiving their
awards in their seats! According to Mike, Halle
Berry (in her favoured one-strap gown) is both "like a
fine wine" and "out of this world". Make up
your mind! And guess who said "There's nothing like a nice bit of
blonde totty" about a pretty Scarlett Johansson? Renée's dress gave her lean frame somewhat of an
hour-glass shape (though her hair and makeup left a lot to be desired),
as did Beyoncé's multiple outfits; she performed three of the
nominated songs
(including one
in French!): why wasn't Emmy Rossum asked to sing
the one from the Phantom? Presenters Orlando Bloom
and a platinum-blonde Kirsten Dunst made a cute couple but lacked
the wow factor of Penelope Cruz and Salma Hayek. Kate Winslet, in cornflower-blue Badgley Mischka,
got my vote for Best Dressed; Helen
Mirren also did the Brits proud, appearing on E!'s Top 5
list. My Worst Dressed were Spike Lee and Johnny
Depp, whose wife Vanessa looked divine in Chanel. A freshly-highlighted Charlize,
continuing the strapless- gown theme, got it just right; new mom Julia Roberts was the
evening's surprise presenter; and Mike gave Gwyneth an award for
Longest Hair. I wasn't keen on Hilary's back-to-front dress;
Drew Barrymore dressed
older than her 30 years; and Gisele Bundchen, in an empire-waisted gown,
could've looked lovely from the right angle, otherwise heavily
pregnant! Funniest Speech went to Charlie Kaufman (Best Screenplay
winner for Eternal Sunshine) who simply
counted down the seconds remaining on the prompter. Most
Disappointing Moment was Martin Scorcese not winning Best
Director.
BAFTAs/Feb
12: The show
was hosted by the likeable Stephen Fry and lasted a nice concise two hours
with no showy song and dance numbers. The British Academy shared the awards amongst US (The
Aviator,
Ray, Eternal Sunshine, Sideways, Collateral) and non-US (Vera Drake,
Closer, The Motorcycle Diaries) films. Clothes-wise, I wasn't keen on
Juliette Lewis's low-cut, claret dress which was
reminiscent of a leotard: Mike thought she looked like Justin Hawkins
of The Darkness! Sienna Miller was her usual pretty self in
a floral dress, whereas Diane Kruger ('the face that launched a
thousand ships') looked kinda plain. Quite unlike their TV
alter egos, Helen Mirren was sexy in a lacy, bra-revealing dress (what would Det
Supt Tennison say?),
and Gillian The X Files Anderson had long, blonde curls and
spoke with an English accent. Best Dressed Male was Pierce
Brosnan, Most Nervous Winner Charlie Kaufman (who also gave the
shortest speech), Most Humble Winner John Barry, Most Popular Winner Imelda
Staunton and Most Overlooked Kate Winslet.
SAG Awards/Feb 5:
The stand-outs on the red carpet included Kate Winslet (in pale
turquoise), Hilary Swank (super hair and make-up), Teri Hatcher and
Cate Blanchett: the latter three wore
black. Debra Messing bounced back from her Golden Globes
horror in a
stunning fuchsia dress; Mena Suvari looked sunny in a yellow
floral print; and Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis were their usual
quirky selves. ET's Best Dressed
was Charlize Theron, but I thought her pulled-back, dark hair too
stark with her full-length, black gown. Poor old Imelda
Staunton (Vera Drake) was ET's Worst Dressed
(another Brit!, see below): she did admit to wearing something she'd had
hanging in her wardrobe though. The movie acting honours
went to Jamie Foxx, who beat out Leonardo, Hilary Swank ("No
she's not!", Mike always says), who beat out Annette B., and
the cast of Sideways.
Golden
Globes/Jan 16: I liked Nicole Kidman in colour (a teal Gucci gown with peacock feather detail) and Cate Blanchett in 1930s-style, periwinkle-blue
Jean-Paul Gaultier; Eva Longoria stood out from her DH co-stars in short, strapless Oscar De La Renta
(très SJP!); Teri Hatcher glowed in silver, clingy Donna Karan; Marcia Cross showed off
milky skin in espresso-coloured
velvet; and a glam Felicity Huffman was the complete opposite of her
hassled mom TV persona. Young actresses Mischa Barton and Emily Rossum looked
lovely, as did Kate Hudson (in chocolate) and Hilary Swank (in
bronze). Natalie Portman was cloning Keira Knightley; Charlize Theron
paired a stunning dark brown bob with her Dior midnight-blue
dress; Mekhi Phifer (ER) looked sharp in a lavender striped shirt;
and Mariska Hargitay
(Law & Order: SVU) was in need of nipple-shields!
I didn't like Halle Berry's boob-binding dress, Lisa-Marie Presley's
Goth get-up, Annette Bening's spiky hair do and spaghetti-strap dress, Paula Abdul's
bustier or all the black gowns showing up on the red carpet, especially Debra Messing's frumpy frock
- the Duchess of York (why was she there?) was Entertainment
Tonight's Worst Dressed two years in a row for being the 'f' word!
And another 'Why was she there?', Nicky Hilton was way too orange
(sorry, tanned).
Jamie Foxx was Most Handsome, Leo DiCaprio Most Humble, Hilary Swank Most
Adorable and Martin Scorcese Most Overlooked.
