Watertown Revisited, Aug 4-6

Back ] Up ] Next ]

Mike and I drove up to Wisconsin to visit Ray & Cherie in Watertown on the weekend of their town's big summer party, Riverfest.

Cherie and Mike enjoying the music of Ray's band, Vintage Gear.

The next day Mike was in his element at the Great Dane Brewery in nearby Madison.

The Madison Capitol, built 1906-1917 at a cost of $7.25m after a devastating fire left the second Capitol badly damaged, is distinguished as being the only State Capitol ever built on an isthmus.

Monona Terrace, a Frank Lloyd Wright-designed community and convention center.

An isthmus is a narrow strip of land which is bordered on two sides by water and connects two larger land masses; the body of water in question here is Lake Monona.

Brightly-decorated cow statues dotted the entire downtown to celebrate Wisconsin's place as a leading state in milk and cheese production.

Our tour guide Garrett, a former UW-Madison alum, took us to some of his old haunts.

Here we are at the university campus on Lake Mendota.

After a second evening at Riverfest which culminated in a truly spectacular firework display, it was back to Bellows Brew Pub for more vintage music from the band (pictured above).

Just time to relax awhile in Ray and Cherie's lovely gardens before it was time to jump in the car and head back to the city.
