Setting off by train on the afternoon of Mike's birthday,
we arrived in Denver the
following morning and drove the 60 miles to Keystone, where we stayed in
Frank's mom's fabulous house. We visited the small town of Breckenridge
('the high point of any visit to Summit County') and the glitzy 'Tyrolean'
village of Vail in the Elk Mountains, the biggest ski resort in the US.

Thank
God for the lounge car!

Disembarking
in Denver.

Off
for lunch in River Run Village, part of Keystone Resort.

The
weather got bleaker as we drove through Arapahoe Basin en route to Breckenridge.

We
made it in time for Happy Hour at the Gold Pan Saloon...

...but
had to dig the car out on the return journey!!

Dressed
up for a night in.

View from the guest room at Elk House.

In
Vail on my birthday.

Home
via River Run and Lakeside villages to check out the bars.

A
round of Margaritas before dinner...and toasted marshmallows after.

Elk
House's backyard.

Atop
Dercum Mountain in Keystone.

Back
down by 'gondola'.

All
packed and ready to leave.

Downtown
Denver.

The
California Zephyr was two hours late.
